About Prof Rupert Bourne
Professor Rupert Bourne is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based in Cambridge, currently seeing private patients at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital and Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital. He is also a Professor of Ophthalmology at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. Professor Bourne received his training at the renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital. He further honed his expertise through two Glaucoma fellowships, one at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the other at the prestigious Shiley Eye Centre/Hamilton Glaucoma Center in San Diego, California, USA. Professor Bourne's professional interests focus on glaucoma and cataract surgery, and he is recognised for his outstanding research contributions. His primary research areas include advanced techniques in glaucoma diagnosis and progression, as well as the management of glaucoma in community settings. Additionally, he has been actively involved in overseas ophthalmology, leading the design and analysis of several large population-based surveys of eye diseases, with projects spanning countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Trinidad. As the Chair of the National Institute for Health Research Ophthalmology Specialty Group, Professor Bourne plays a crucial role in spearheading National Health Service (NHS) research delivery. He has an extensive portfolio of published work, with over 170 papers featured in leading peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals, along with book chapters. Notably, he is also invited as a reviewer for several prominent ophthalmology journals, showcasing his recognition in the scientific community. Beyond his expertise in glaucoma and cataract surgery, Professor Bourne has additional research interests in altitude ophthalmology and expedition medicine, highlighting his diverse and wide-ranging contributions to the field. In his capacity as Coordinator of the Vision Loss Expert Group for the Global Burden of Disease Study, Professor Bourne has been instrumental in conducting long-term research on the worldwide prevalence rates of blindness and visual impairment. This significant research initiative is carried out in partnership with the World Health Organisation, emphasising his dedication to making a global impact in eye health.
