Mr Philip Alexander is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with expertise in cataract and vitreoretinal surgery. He is based at Addenbrooke's Hospital, (part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust) where in addition to his cataract and vitreoretinal workload, co-leads the Stickler Syndrome Diagnostic Service. Mr Alexander attained his medical degree from the University of London, graduating with a double distinction and a number academic prizes. He went on to complete his surgical training in Nottingham, Southampton and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
Outside his medical practice, Mr Alexander extensively publishes in peer-reviewed journals and has written over 50 publications, including a first author publication in 2023 in the New England Journal of Medicine. In 2013, he was awarded funding from the Global Ophthalmology Award Programme allowing him to conduct research into ocular stem cell transplantation, and he went on to receive a doctorate for his work. Mr Alexander has further gained an MBA, with his thesis looking at healthcare innovation for patients with diabetic eye disease.
Mr Alexander is very involved in the training of Ophthalmologists and Vitreoretinal Surgical Training Fellows. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and his professional memberships include the British Medical Association and the British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons.
Mr Alexander teaches clinical medical students and is Affiliate Associate Professor of the Clinical School, at the University of Cambridge. He also runs supervisions in neuroscience for preclinical students at Pembroke College.
