Mr
Mr Jamie Ferguson
Orthopaedic Surgery
About
He is an expert in managing non-union, limb deformity and reconstruction of large long bone defects in both the upper and lower limb following infection, tumour excision or trauma. He has championed techniques that reduce reconstruction time with efforts to use patient friendly surgery that minimises treatment duration.
He works closely with the Major Trauma Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and supports a multidisciplinary team meeting for the discussion for complex cases and those suspected of having fracture related infection in the trauma department.
He has an international reputation for managing some of the most complex cases affected by bone infection. He is regularly sort to offer second opinions regarding the management of complex post traumatic long bone injuries, associated limb deformity, fracture non-union, and internal fixation complicated by infection. This includes treating international patients and those referred from other centres in the UK or through referrals from Case Managers.
He won the BMA Prize for Clinical Excellence and completed his surgical training in Oxford. He was awarded the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society 2018 Fellowship to the United States, visiting The Hospital for Specialist Surgery in New York, The Cleveland Medical Center, The Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, and the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He undertook a British Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowship to the Ilizarov Institute in Kurgan, Russia.
He spent a year at the Beit Cure International Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi on a Furlong Fellowship treating cases with complex bone infection.
He has published extensively on several aspects of infection management, including Ilizarov limb reconstruction techniques in bone infection, dead space management in osteomyelitis, local antibiotic carriers, and the diagnosis of fracture-related infection. His collaboration on histological diagnosis of infection contributed to the International Consensus Definition of Fracture Related Infection.
He is a regular invited speaker, both nationally and internationally, on the treatment of bone infection, non-union, limb reconstruction techniques and fracture related infection.
