About Mr Faris Soliman
I am a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon, based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. I have an interest in all aspects of coloproctology, general surgery and emergency abdominal surgery. I undertake minimally invasive and robotic surgery. I am also JAG accredited in endoscopy for both colonoscopy and gastroscopy.
After graduating from medical school from Cardiff in 2010, I have undertaken surgical training in the West Midlands, Wales and Manchester. I have worked in many hospitals throughout Wales over 15+ years. I have also obtained further exposure to general surgical trauma from my time at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, in South Africa. I am trained to undertake a range of open, laparoscopic (keyhole) and robotic abdominal surgery.
Towards the later part of my training, I have undertaken a six-month fellowship at Salford Royal Hospital, which is a world-renowned National Reference Centre for Intestinal Failure and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction. Subsequently, I have also successfully completed a one-year overseas colorectal fellowship in Canada, at the University of Western Ontario. This was a high-volume surgical centre where I obtained further advanced exposure to a broad range of colorectal conditions and operative techniques, including advanced colorectal cancer cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, endoscopy, minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
A significant aspect of my NHS practice involves the surgical management of colorectal (bowel) cancer, diverticular disease and anal conditions. I have additional experience in the care and management of patients with intestinal failure, enterocutaneous (abdominal) fistulae, and complex hernias.
In terms of research, I have been successfully awarded a higher research Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Cardiff University. This was for my work examining peritoneal metastases in colorectal cancer. I have published in peer reviewed journals and presented at conferences and meetings both nationally and internationally.
Finally, I have been successfully been awarded a Post-Graduate Certificate in Medical Education from Dundee University and am an Honorary lecturer at Cardiff University Medical School, where I am regularly involved in teaching and training.
