About Mr David O'Reilly

Mr David O’Reilly is a Consultant Liver and General Surgeon based in Cardiff, where he has practised since 2015. He specialises in general abdominal surgery, with a particular focus on hepatobiliary surgery, including conditions affecting the liver, bile ducts, and gallbladder, as well as abdominal wall hernia surgery. Mr O’Reilly has developed a minimally invasive (laparoscopic) biliary and liver surgery programme and undertakes a high volume of complex procedures. His surgical practice includes liver resections, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and hernia repair across a broad range of presentations. He performs up to 40 liver resections annually and has carried out more than 1,000 laparoscopic gallbladder operations, alongside many hundreds of abdominal wall hernia repairs. In addition to his clinical work, Mr O’Reilly holds several senior leadership and educational roles. He is the Lead General Surgeon in the Royal Air Force and serves as Clinical Director of the RAF’s deployable hospital. He is also the Royal College of Surgeons Tutor for Cardiff and Vale, with responsibility for overseeing the quality of surgical training in the region. Mr O’Reilly is the Quality Improvement and Research Lead for the South Wales Major Trauma Network and Clinical Lead for the Veterans Trauma Network Wales, contributing to service development, trauma care, and surgical governance across Wales.

"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
