About

Mr Andreas Tarnaris is a Functional Neurosurgeon at Mater Private Network in Dublin. He specialises in chronic pain management and has a particular interest in neuromodulation for patients with persistent pain as well as minimally invasive interventional procedures for spinal conditions affecting the neck, arm, back and legs. He joined Mater Private Network in 2024 and sees patients at the Dublin Hospital, and South Dublin Day Hospital in Cherrywood.

He completed his postgraduate training in the UK followed by subspecialty fellowship training in Toronto, Liverpool and Oxford. Before moving to Ireland, he worked as an NHS Consultant at Southampton University Hospital. His approach to care is centred on patient empowerment, with an emphasis on supporting patients to take an active role in their treatment planning in order to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Mr Tarnaris has a long-standing interest in translational research and holds a postgraduate research degree (MD Res) from University College London, where his work focused on clinical and laboratory science. He has published extensively with more than 35 papers in peer-reviewed journals, over 1,200 citations and an h-index of 21. His current research interests include patient-reported outcomes and pain physiology.

He has been an advisor to the European Union on the safety of medical devices and was a co-author of the Neurotechnology Regulation report for the UK Government’s Regulatory Horizons Council in 2022. His understanding of regulatory frameworks and device technologies allows him to select the most appropriate treatment options for patients requiring advanced interventions.

Mr Tarnaris is a member of several professional organisations including the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, the British Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, the British Neurosurgical Trainees Association and the International Society for Hydrocephalus and CSF Disorders.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”

— Mr. Andreas Tarnaris
