About Dr Peter Heydon
Dr Peter Heydon is an experienced ophthalmologist and ophthalmic surgeon with a subspecialist interest in medical retina, uveitis, and cataract surgery. He sees both private and public patients and consults at Central Sydney Eye Surgeons, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Liverpool Hospital, Chatswood Private Hospital, and Alice Springs Hospital. Dr Heydon completed his undergraduate degree at the University of New South Wales before undertaking ophthalmology training through the Sydney Eye Hospital network, gaining experience in various locations including Darwin, Port Macquarie, and Lismore. He then completed a specialist fellowship in Medical Retina and Uveitis at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, further advancing his expertise in complex retinal and inflammatory eye diseases. As a Visiting Medical Officer at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Liverpool Hospital, Dr Heydon is actively involved in managing complicated ophthalmological conditions, with a particular focus on uveitic cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and systemic conditions affecting the eye, such as autoimmune diseases. He is also engaged in registrar and hospital teaching, providing clinical and surgical training. Dr Heydon has contributed significantly to ophthalmic research, having published book chapters and journal manuscripts. He is currently involved in the Sydney Local Health District Rare Diseases steering committee and has research interests in artificial intelligence (AI) screening for diabetic retinopathy and uveitis complications associated with biologic medications. He regularly locums at Alice Springs Hospital and has a special interest in the people, culture, and geography of Central Australia. His dedication to research and clinical advancements is further demonstrated by his role as a peer reviewer for the British Journal of Ophthalmology and Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. Dr Heydon’s extensive surgical experience includes over 2,000 cataract operations and more than 5,000 intravitreal injections. He remains committed to providing high-quality patient care while advancing the field of ophthalmology through research, education, and mentorship.
