About
Mr Paul Cleaveland is a Consultant Urologist with a practice in general urology and subspecialist expertise in robotic pelvic oncology and the management of prostate, bladder and testicular cancers. He graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2009 and moved to Manchester to complete foundation training, followed by core surgical training and urology specialty training across the North West. During this time, he also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Workplace-Based Medical Education at Edge Hill University.
His interest in robotic and pelvic oncology surgery began during placements at The Christie Hospital and Stepping Hill Hospital. After completing specialist urology training, he undertook a prestigious fellowship in robotic pelvic urological oncology at University College London Hospitals—the highest-volume centre for this surgery in the UK. Here, he trained extensively in robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic cystectomy, urinary diversion, and open reconstructive pelvic cancer surgery. He further enhanced his expertise during an observership at the renowned Martini-Klinik in Hamburg, Europe’s leading prostatectomy centre.
In 2020, Mr Cleaveland was appointed as a Consultant Urologist at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. The team at Stockport has performed more than 1,000 robotic prostatectomies, and Mr Cleaveland offers the Retzius-sparing robotic prostatectomy, a technique shown to significantly improve early urinary continence recovery in men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. He provides state-of-the-art diagnostic pathways for suspected prostate cancer, including MRI and ultrasound-guided transperineal targeted biopsies.
He is also experienced in the investigation and treatment of bladder cancer, performing flexible cystoscopy, transurethral resection of bladder tumours (TURBT), and laser ablation. Beyond oncology, Mr Cleaveland manages benign prostatic disease and male urinary symptoms, offering both medical therapy and surgical interventions such as bipolar TURP, Rezum watervaporisation of the porstate and robotic simple prostatectomy. His broader practice includes treatment of urinary incontinence, urinary stones and infections, as well as procedures including circumcision, hydrocoele repair, vasectomy and orchidectomy.
Mr Cleaveland teaches and examines medical students at Manchester University, interviews for national urology trainee selection, and serves as faculty for the FRCS (Urol) revision course. He also trains regional specialty trainees and international fellows in robotic surgery and general urology. Within his Trust, he is the cancer lead for urology and plays an active role in developing cancer pathways, improving diagnostic services, and leading quality-improvement initiatives.
He has contributed to patient education by producing pre-operative information videos for complex urological procedures, helping to enhance understanding and the consenting process. His academic work includes multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, with presentations delivered at major international urology and robotic surgery conferences.
