About Miss Alessandra Martins
Ms Alessandra Martins is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Richard Desmond Children's Eye Centre, as well as an honorary consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She has expertise in complex adult and paediatric/childhood glaucoma, as well as cataract surgery. In addition, she is a Clinical Senior Lecturer for the Discipline of Clinical Ophthalmology and Eye Health at the University of Sydney, Australia. She is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO). She is actively involved in ophthalmic education and training and holds a number of distinguished educational leadership roles in the UK including Training Programme Director for all final year and academic trainees in Ophthalmology, London, as well as Curriculum Sub-Committee member and Training Committee member devising the ophthalmology curriculum and its implementation for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists . She is also co-secretary for the UK Paediatric Glaucoma Society. Prior to this she was a panel member assessing specialist International Medical Graduates in ophthalmology for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. Clinical Expertise Ms Martins has extensive clinical experience in diagnosing and treating the full range of all types of adult and childhood glaucoma, including the medical, surgical and laser management, with particular interest in the surgical management of complex glaucoma cases as well as revision surgery. She also performs cataract surgery, with particular emphasis on patients with glaucoma. She has experience in the early detection of glaucoma using topographic electrodiagnostic techniques. She has worked as a glaucoma consultant in both the UK and Australia, previously jointly at both Moorfields and Royal Free London, as well as Sydney Eye Hospital. Training She completed her medical degree with Honours MBBS (Hons) from the University of Sydney and went on to complete her ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital. During her training, she was bestowed a University Postgraduate Scholarship and an Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia grant to complete a research Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Sydney, where her doctoral research focused on blue-yellow objective perimetry in early glaucoma and subsequently a Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologist scholarship to complete subspecialty clinical fellowship training in glaucoma at Moorfields Eye Hospital where she now serves as a consultant ophthalmologist. She was appointed as a consultant ophthalmologist in 2011. Memberships held include: Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Member of the UK and Eire Glaucoma Society (UKEGS) Member (co-secretary) of the UK Paediatric and Glaucoma Societ(UKPGS) Member of the Australian and New Zealand Glaucoma Society (ANZGS) Member of the European Glaucoma Society (EGS)
