About Mrs Indira Madgula
Mrs. Indira Madgula is a highly respected Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Glaucoma Specialist at Royal Bolton Hospital. She previously worked at the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where she led the glaucoma service. Mrs. Madgula was instrumental in developing and pioneering a shared care glaucoma model, which significantly improved service delivery and earned her national recognition as a finalist at the 2022 Hospital Services Journal (HSJ) Awards. With extensive training in ophthalmology at Liverpool and further sub-specialist fellowship training in glaucoma at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Mrs. Madgula’s clinical expertise lies in managing complex adult glaucoma. She performs a wide range of procedures including trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage (tube) surgery, and glaucoma lasers such as YAG peripheral iridotomy and selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT). She is also highly experienced in cataract surgery, both as a standalone procedure and in combination with minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) such as iStent, Hydrus, and OMNI. In addition to her clinical excellence, Mrs. Madgula is known for her contributions to medical education and examination. She was the first ophthalmology trainee in the UK to be appointed as an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth), London. She has also served as a PLAB examiner for the General Medical Council (GMC) and currently examines internationally for the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow, as well as nationally for the RCOphth, London. Her dedication to teaching and mentoring the next generation of medical professionals was recognised through her appointment as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, where she is involved in training medical students. She is known for her extensive experience in teaching and training specialist optometrists and junior surgeons. Her commitment to global eye health was recognised with the Dorey Lister Award from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2015 for her charitable work in India. She continues to contribute to the field through presentations at national and international conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Mrs. Madgula sees patients across several locations including Blackpool, Huddersfield, Haydock, providing expert glaucoma and cataract care to communities across the North West.
