About Mr Mark Herron
Mark Herron has over 18 years of experience at Consultant level in managing all adult and adolescent foot and ankle disorders. Having qualified from Birmingham University Medical School in 1991 and trained in orthopaedic surgery between Birmingham and Bristol, he was later awarded fellowships in foot and ankle surgery in Oxford, Dublin and Bristol. His appointment to a Consultant post was at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in 2003 where he spent the next five years developing the Foot and Ankle Unit into a nationally recognized tertiary referral service. Following this he setup a Foot and Ankle Clinic in Birmingham where he continues to see patients from around the world. He has worked widely in elite sport, including dance, and has been the foot and ankle surgeon to the British gymnastics team and Warwickshire County Cricket Club. In this field he has particular expertise in Achilles tendon disorders and all aspects of ankle instability and impingement syndromes. Minimally invasive surgical techniques around the foot and ankle, especially for the ankle and great toe, are an interest of his. In general these significantly limit post-operative discomfort, allow rapid weight bearing and minimize recovery times and accelerate return to function. They are often of great use in arthritic and post-traumatic problems. Mark Herron uses a wide variety of techniques for bunion correction, the emphasis being on minimizing pain and allowing early return to work. He also regularly undertakes all other deformity correction (such as flat feet and high–arched feet) as well as all revision cases. Examples of the type of operations he commonly carries out are Hallux Valgus (bunion) corrections , correction of any forefoot deformity , minimally invasive & arthroscopic surgery to the big toe ,ankle arthroscopy and ankle ligament reconstruction , Flat foot & Cavus foot (High arch) deformity correction , arthroscopic ankle fusion , all varieties of Achilles and other tendon operations as well as all revision cases. His team includes specialist radiologists, physiotherapists and podiatrists ensuring that the most appropriate non-operative treatments are always available. Mark Herron is the Editor in Chief for OrthOracle, a digital publishing platform in Orthopaedic surgery that has been developed in the UK and is used across the World by Surgeons Its aim is to disseminate best surgical practice amongst the Surgical profession thereby improving outcomes and reducing adverse surgical events. OrthOracle has expanded to 7 atlas's Mark holds the position of honorary senior lecturer for the University of Birmingham.
