Professor John Axford is a Consultant Rheumatologist and Emeritus Professor of Clinical Rheumatology at St George's University Hospitals. He specialises in musculoskeletal disorders, including osteoarthritis, and autoimmune rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and Lupus. He also has a clinical interest in paediatric arthritis and back pain.
He established the The Hotung Centre at St Geroge's in 2002 and was the first director. The centre integrates all facets of musculoskeletal clinical care and research and is now an internationally acknowledged centre of clinical excellence. He is also the founding director of the London Rheumatology Clinic, which aims to provide holistic individualised clinical care by specified leading clinicians in a coordinated and integrated manner.
Professor Axford has an active research interest in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus, and has authored over 80 peer reviewed paper and 20 books. He is often invited to speak at conferenced both nationally and internationally.
He has received a number of awards including BMA book of the year award, the Doris Hillier Award for Rheumatology, four NHS/ACCEA merit awards and honorary membership of the Royal Society of Medicine. He is an Honorary member of the Royal Society of Medicine and the Vice Chair of the Education and Training Committee for the British Society of Rheumatology.
