About
Known for one of the most important breakthroughs in the treatment of chronic pain/fibromyalgia in the past 30 years, Dr Stephanie Kaye-Barrett is a highly trained and experienced Consultant Rheumatologist and General Physician with over 20 years of consultant-grade practice.
In her clinical practice, Dr Kaye-Barrett uses neuromodulation techniques (rTMS) to treat a range of painful rheumatological conditions including fibromyalgia, symptomatic hypermobility (hEDS/HSD), and dysautonomia. Her recent interest is research and treatment of the consequences following Covid-19 infection, in hypermobile patients.
Dr Kaye-Barrett also has a passion for the early diagnosis of osteoporosis. When treating osteoporotic fractures, she uses advanced injectable medications. Peripheral magnetic stimulation (PMS) can be used for the chronic pain associated with spinal fractures.
She previously held the lead consultant rheumatology role at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for eight years and served as a Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology at Imperial College. During this time, she led a team of more than 12 doctors and three specialist nurses, and she established specialist clinics for osteoporosis and early or complex inflammatory arthritis for patients starting biological therapies.
Her research focused on the small intestine in systemic sclerosis, where she characterised early vasculopathy that leads to fibrosis and malabsorption. She has also published papers on osteoporosis and innovative treatments for gout. Dr Kaye-Barrett was awarded a Junior Clinical Fellowship from Arthritis Research UK (Versus Arthritis) and carried out research at the Royal Free Hospital that contributed to her MD thesis.
Dr Kaye-Barrett completed her undergraduate medical education at Liverpool University, where she received multiple awards including the Final Year Clinical Medical Prize, the Roaf Travelling Scholarship for paediatric studies in Nairobi and Mombasa, and the Graham White Scholarship for primary care work in the West Indies.
She is currently the Medical Director of London Rheumatology Centre and has helped set up another clinic at 116 Harley Street (The London Clinic), collaborating with like-minded colleagues. In addition, she provides medical education through live interviews and webinars at the Royal Society of Medicine, covering topics such as Covid-19, the cytokine storm, and other autoimmune conditions, with these webinars broadcast to 22 countries. Dr Kaye-Barrett is also a former President of the Rheumatology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine (2017–18) and former trustee. She remains a member of the Rheumatology Section Council.
