About
Professor Alexander Woywodt is a highly experienced consultant nephrologist who is based at the Regional Kidney Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the North West of England.
In his NHS practice Professor Woywodt sees patients with a variety of kidney problems but has a special interest in kidney transplantation and leads the transplant recipient assessment at his NHS hospital base. He also sees patients after transplantation. He also does general nephrology outpatient clinics in a variety of locations.
In his private practice at BMI Lancaster, he sees patients from Lancashire, Cumbria and the wider regio i.e. the North West of England. He sees patients who have chronic kidney disease or who have difficult to control blood pressure or proteinuria/ haematuria (protein/blood in the urine). In his private practice he does not see patients who are on dialysis or close to needing dialysis due to the fact that such patients require the support of a large multi-disciplinary team which is only available in the NHS.
Professor Woywodt graduated in 1997 before training in hospitals in Berlin and at the department of nephrology at Hanover Medical School. He has always had an interest in research and led a research team looking at the mechanisms and the diagnosis of small vessel vasculitis. This led to the "Habilitation", the German equivalent to Associate Professorship, In 2007, Professor Woywodt was appointed at the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where he specialises in general nephrology and leads the transplant assessment service. He also holds satellite clinics in Kendal and Barrow-in-Furness. He has served as Associate Dean for Year 3 Undergraduate Medical Students on the Manchester University MbChB degree from 2011 to 2020.
Professor Woywodt has published more than 200 journal articles throughout his career including two original articles in Lancet. He has also co-authored two chapters of the Oxford Textbook of Clinical Nephrology the worlds leading textbook of Renal Medicine. He is also a peer reviewer for a number of journals and is associate editor of Clinical Kidney Journal and BMC Nephrology.
