Mr
Mr Aaron McAvoy
Obstetrics & Gynaecology
About
Mr McAvoy initially trained in Northern Ireland and moved to England in 2017 to complete his specialist training. During this time, he undertook advanced training modules in gynaecological oncology and hysteroscopy. His training provided him with a wide range of experience in benign gynaecology and advanced minimal access (laparoscopic) surgery. After qualifying as a consultant he has continued to build his portfolio of skills including undertaking training in pelvic floor surgery for prolpase and treatment of women with urinary incontinence. he is a highly skilled endoscopist running advanced outpatient services managing women with menstrual disorders via advanced endoscopy techniques such as outpatient myomectomy and endometrial ablation.
He runs a weekly hysteroscopy clinic focused on the management of endometrial abnormalities and heavy menstrual bleeding, and the assessment of women with suspected cancer. He also performs laparoscopic procedures for conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and carries out total laparoscopic hysterectomies for benign indications as well as open hysterectomies and myomectomies for women with enlarged fibroid uterus .
Mr McAvoy treats a broad spectrum of gynaecological conditions, including pelvic pain, fibroids, polyps, menstrual disorders, prolapse, menopause, sexual dysfunction, post-menopausal bleeding, and ovulatory disorders, as well as a range of urogynaecological conditions such as overactive bladder, incontinence and prolapse. He is also I member of the British Gynae endoscopy society, and the British society for Urogynaecology.
He is a GMC-accredited educational supervisor in obstetrics and gynaecology and previously as College Tutor at Worthing and St Richard's Hospitals, during which time both units gained national recognition from the Royal college of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for excellence in training.
Since then he has been appointed as University hospitals Sussex Deputy director for medical education. In this role, he is responsible for the training and supervision of resident doctors across the whole of University Hospitals Sussex in all specialities.
Mr McAvoy has worked regularly with multidisciplinary teams in obstetrics and gynaecology to provide training on complex communication, conflict resolution and human factors training. He is forthright in his opinion that listening carefully to patients and ensuring they have enough time to be involved in decision making about their care is a number one priority in ensuring patients are satisfied that they are recieving care they feel is correct for them. Feedback from patients has consistently shown he is able to communicate well, takes time to listen and works hard to explore all viable treatment options with a strong emphasis on patient autonomy.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
