About

Dr Wafaa Al Shaer is a Specialist Ophthalmologist at GMCClinics in Dubai, with over 30 years of experience in ophthalmology and eye surgery. She specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal vascular diseases, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and hereditary retinal disorders, in addition to providing general ophthalmic care. She is also licensed to perform certified vision evaluations for pilots through the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
Dr Al Shaer graduated in medicine from the Medical Academy in Bulgaria before completing her postgraduate specialty training in ophthalmology and eye microsurgery at the Union Scientific Research Institute for Eye Disease and Microsurgery in Moscow. From 1989 to 1999, Dr Al Shaer practised as part of the specialist ophthalmology team at Rashid and Dubai Hospitals under the Dubai Department of Health. Her clinical services include comprehensive eye examinations (including for paediatric patients and pilots), amblyopia treatment, diabetic retinopathy management with laser, glaucoma and hypertension-related ocular care, evaluation of neuro-ophthalmological disorders, and pre-LASIK surgery assessments. She is also experienced in advanced diagnostic techniques such as fundus fluorescein angiography, macular and optic nerve head OCT, visual field testing, and retinal imaging.
