Seine Forschung in der experimentellen und klinischen Regionalanästhesie wurde mit mehreren wissenschaftlichen Auszeichnungen gewürdigt, darunter der August-Bier-Preis und die ESRA Albert Van Steenberge Honorary Lecture. Seine medizinische Ausbildung absolvierte er an der Philipps-Universität Marburg, wo er sein Staatsexamen in Humanmedizin erlangte.
