Professor Shan Rajendra is a Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist and Interventional Endoscopist based in Sydney. He is Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Director of Medicine and Clinical Executive Director at Bankstown–Lidcombe Hospital, and Director of the Gastrointestinal Viral Oncology Group at the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research.
Professor Rajendra obtained his undergraduate medical degree from the National University of Ireland in 1988. He subsequently worked in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom for six years and completed a South-East Thames rotation in Gastroenterology and General Medicine. During this period, he also undertook research as a fellow at the Digestive Diseases Research Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College in London.
His clinical expertise includes gastroenterology, hepatology and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. He performs complex endoscopic procedures, including the removal of large gastrointestinal polyps and interventions involving the bile and pancreatic ducts.
Professor Rajendra’s research focuses on gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and Barrett’s oesophagus. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and has served on the Web Committee of the International Society for Diseases of the Oesophagus and as Associate Editor of its official journal, Diseases of the Esophagus. He is also the founding director and lead investigator of the Gastrointestinal Viral Oncology Group, which identified an association between high-risk human papillomavirus and Barrett’s dysplasia and oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
