About
Mr. Ronald van Heerwaarden is a globally recognised orthopaedic surgeon with over two decades of expertise in limb realignment, deformity correction, and joint-preserving surgical techniques. Practising since 2001, he has earned a reputation as one of Europe’s foremost specialists in osteotomy surgery and complex lower limb reconstruction.
He is the founder of the Centre for Deformity Correction and Joint Preserving Surgery at Kliniek ViaSana in Mill, the Netherlands – a pioneering clinic he established in 2016 to focus on innovative, non-replacement solutions for patients suffering from complex knee and leg conditions. In addition to his practice in the Netherlands, Mr. van Heerwaarden has served since 2015 as a consultant for advanced osteotomy procedures at the International Knee and Joint Centre in Abu Dhabi, a world-class referral centre for joint preservation in the Middle East.
His UK-based practice includes appointments at The London Clinic and Cromwell Hospital, where he consults on complex osteotomies, limb alignment, and alternatives to joint replacement, often treating cases referred from across the UK and abroad.
From 2001 to 2015, Mr. van Heerwaarden led the Limb Reconstruction and Limb Deformity Units at the renowned Sint Maartenskliniek in the Netherlands. During his tenure, he significantly advanced the practice of deformity correction and surgical limb realignment. He also contributed heavily to medical innovation, co-developing the TomoFix plate system and other osteotomy tools as part of his membership in the AO Knee Expert Group (2003–2014).
He remains actively involved in surgical innovation and implant design, currently collaborating with Newclip Technics on the development of next-generation instruments for osteotomy procedures.
His leadership within the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy (ESSKA) includes serving as the inaugural Chairman of the ESSKA Osteotomy Committee from 2016 to 2018, Vice-Chair until 2019, and as a contributor to the 2021–2022 ESSKA Osteotomy Consensus Project – a major effort to standardise best practices in knee realignment surgery.
An accomplished educator and published author, Mr. van Heerwaarden has co-edited several authoritative books on osteotomies, including Osteotomies around the Knee and Osteotomies for Posttraumatic Deformities. He also co-edited the January 2013 special issue of KSSTA dedicated to osteotomy surgery. Since 2003, he has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, contributing significantly to academic literature on deformity analysis and joint preservation.
Over the past 25 years, he has been a keynote speaker and faculty member at leading orthopaedic conferences worldwide, and continues to train surgeons globally in advanced osteotomy techniques and limb reconstruction.
