He then won a hugely competitive MRC Clinician Scientiest award to move to UCL, leading a group focused on lung cancer develoment, early detection and novel treatments for lung diseases. In 2010, he was awarded one of the very few Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Fellowships which he has held for ten years. His work has resulted in both practice changing diagnostic trials for lung disease, the development of new drugs and therapies and he now leads one of the countries largest trials called SUMMIT - involving building four CT screening centres for lung cancer, delivering lung cancer screeening for 25,000 people.
Prof Janes has published over 150 manuscripts on lung disease in the best journals, including Nature, Science, New England Journal of Medicine and he continues his clinics and bronchoscopy lists delivering expert care to his patients.
