Professor Paul Foster is an internationally-renowned consultant ophthalmic surgeon and a key opinion leader in glaucoma. With extensive expertise in his field, his areas of clinical focus is glaucoma diagnosis and management, and cataract surgery in patients with glaucoma. He shaped the current treatment protocols for angle-closure glaucoma worldwide, and led the introduction of clear lens extraction surgery for people with this condition. He was named as one the hundred most influential people in ophthalmology worldwide by The Ophthalmologist magazine in 2014, 2016, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Prof. Foster's contributions to the field of ophthalmology have been internationally recognized through awards in the UK, the USA, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Germany and China. He has held prestigious editorial positions in leading ophthalmology journals, including the British Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Glaucoma.

As an esteemed academic, Prof. Foster holds various positions at renowned institutions. He is Theme Leader for Population and Data Sciences at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, where he also serves as a Professor of Glaucoma Studies. Moreover, he is an Honorary Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and research theme leader for Translational Data Science at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Ophthalmology (Moorfields & UCL). UCL's Institute of Ophthalmology is the world ranked No. 1 centre for eye and vision research globally. Prof Foster is ranked No. 1 for eye and vision research citations in UCL.

Prof. Foster's research interests lie in the impact of lifestyle, environment, and diet on glaucoma, cataract and other chronic eye diseases. He has made significant contributions to the field through his research on the prevention of angle-closure glaucoma by laser surgery, the use of lens extraction for control of angle-closure glaucoma, and advancements in the diagnosis and management of open angle glaucoma. His work has been published in prestigious journals such as The Lancet, The BMJ, and "Nature" titled journals.

His achievements and influence in the field have garnered recognition internationally. He is a member of the prestigious Glaucoma Research Society, limited to 100 members globally, and has also been ranked among the Top 25 Eye & Vision Researchers in Europe by Lab Times Online. His contributions have been honoured with prestigious awards, including the Alcon Research Institute Prize, an Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and The Pei-Fei Lee memorial lectureship at Harvard University Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. 1n 2015, Prof Foster was made an honorary Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England for services to surgical science.

Prof. Foster obtained his medical training at Nottingham University Medical School and further specialised at the Oxford Eye Hospital and the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, in London. He also holds a Ph.D. in ophthalmology from University College London.
