About

Professor Mark Whiteley is becoming known as the "Celebrity Veins Doctor" following his highly public treatment of Virgin DJ and Celebrity Chris Evans in November 2019. Using his pioneering techniques for varicose veins and thread veins, Mark has treated many celebrities over the last 20 years. Those who have gone public include Kate Lawler, Ian Hyland, and Eve Cameron. Mark has been featured in Tatler as "Best for veins" for the last 11 years.
Professor Mark Whiteley is a Consultant Venous Surgeon at The Whiteley Clinic and a visiting Professor at The University of Surrey. He is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome and he was the first surgeon to perform endovenous (keyhole) surgery for varicose veins in the UK.
Professor Whiteley opened The Whiteley Clinic in 2003, which is now a network known as The Whiteley Clinic. He has a research and education unit there and his team has won national and international prizes for their advances in venous surgery for leg and pelvic veins. They have also published over 130 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Professor Whiteley has been named as the recommended vein surgeon by Tatler for over 11 years. In 2001, he and Judy Holdstock invented the TRLOP technique used for closing incompetent perforating veins. He has also written a book - "Understanding Venous Reflux: The Cause of Varicose Veins and Venous Leg Ulcers" and had edited a book with Emma Dabbs "Advances in Phlebology and Venous Surgery Volume 1".
In February 2019 he performed the first microwave treatment of varicose veins in the UK.
In May 2019 he performed the first Echotherapy (Sonovein using HIFU - High Intensity focused ultrasound) treatment of varicose veins in the UK.

Diseases, Medical Tests and Treatments
Echotherapy or SONOVEIN (HIFU - High Intensity focused ultrasound) for varicose veins
In May 2019, Mark was the first doctor in the UK - and the second doctor in the world - to perform Sonovein treatment for varicose veins.
Sonovein uses HIFU - High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound - to ablate varicose veins. Unlike any other method of ablating varicose veins, this is totally non-invasive. The treatment happens by beaming Ultrasound across the skin and concentrating the power on the target vein (see: https://thewhiteleyclinic.co.uk/sonovein-hifu-high-intensity-focused-ultrasound/)
ENDOVENOUS MICROWAVE Varicose veins ablation (emwa)
In February 2019, Mark Whiteley performed the first Microwave Ablation of Varicose Veins (EMWA) in the UK. He is now running course to teach other doctors in the UK how to perform this surgery.

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) - Walk in Walk out local anaesthetic only
Radial laser for larger veins
Jacket fibre laser for smaller veins
All treatments based on The Whiteley Protocol - a research-based protocol to optimise treatments
Endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) - WALK IN WALK OUT LOCAL ANAESTHETIC ONLY
RFiTT - using the Whiteley Protocol proven technique to assure closure
VenClose
VenAseal glue "Superglue" for varicose veins -
Non-thermal and so reduces the need for local anaesthetic injections.
Clarivein (MOCA)
Mechanochemical ablation (MOCA) called "Clarivein" uses a rotating wire and sclerotherapy to close varicose veins without needing many local anaesthetic injections.
Foam Sclerotherapy
Made using the published "Whiteley-Patel" technique and CO2:O2 (not air) to keep as safe as possible.
TRLOP - Transluminal Occlusion of Perforator veins
Invented by Mark Whiteley and Judy Holdstock in 2001, the TRLOP technique is used to close incompetent perforating veins. Failure to treat these veins has been shown to be one of the commonest reasons that varicose veins come back again after treatment.
Phlebectomy of forehead and facial veins
Removal of large veins from the forehead and from around the eyes under local anaesthetic with virtually no scars.
Coil embolisation of pelvic veins
At the Whiteley Clinics we have specialist radiologists that work with us who perform coils embolisation of pelvic veins in patients with pelvic varicose veins or pelvic congestion syndrome.
Microsclerotherapy
For leg spider veins (Telangectasia).

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
