About

Professor Kefah Mokbel is recognised as an internationally renowned oncoplastic breast surgeon. He is the founder and Chair of Breast Cancer Surgery at the London Breast Institute.
He completed his undergraduate medical education at the London Hospital Medical College (now Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London) in 1990, followed by surgical training at the Royal Marsden, Charing Cross, Chelsea and Westminster, Saint Mary’s and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals. He completed his higher surgical training as an oncoplastic breast surgeon in 2000, receiving multiple prestigious prizes and honours during his training and postgraduate career.
Professor Mokbel became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS, England) in 1994 and was awarded a Master of Surgery degree by Imperial College London in 2000 for his research in breast cancer molecular biology.
He was appointed as a substantive Consultant Breast Surgeon at St George’s Hospital NHS Trust in 2001, a role he held until November 2010 before becoming an Honorary Consultant Breast Surgeon at St George’s Hospital. In recognition of his contribution to breast cancer research, he was appointed Honorary Professor of Breast Cancer Surgery at Brunel University London in 2006 and Reader in Breast Surgery at St George’s University of London in 2005.
In January 2025, he was appointed Honorary Professor of Medicine at Cardiff University School of Medicine.
His clinical expertise covers: early breast cancer detection; rapid assessment of breast lumps; management of breast pain, DCIS, LCIS and nipple discharge; minimally invasive breast surgery; sentinel node biopsy; wireless breast localisation (Savi Scout, Magseed and radiofrequency identification tags); oncoplastic breast surgery; lipofilling/fat grafting; skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy; immediate ADM/mesh-assisted pre-pectoral implant-based breast reconstruction; breast cancer prevention; genetic predisposition; breast MRI; risk-reducing surgery for BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB2 mutation carriers; and the management of benign breast conditions including cysts, fibroadenomas and breast pain. He also has extensive experience in reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery.
Professor Mokbel is actively involved in research in both the molecular basis and clinical management of breast cancer, as well as aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery. He has authored or co-authored more than 400 scientific papers, editorials, commentaries and textbook chapters, in addition to 14 textbooks for medical students and postgraduate trainees. His current academic work focuses on translating clinical trial evidence into everyday surgical practice.
According to Google Scholar, Professor Mokbel has a H-index of 61, currently the highest academic ranking among breast cancer surgeons practicing in London. He serves on the editorial boards of several international medical journals and is a peer reviewer for leading journals including The Lancet. He has supervised and examined numerous postgraduate degrees (MD, MS, MSc) and PhDs.
He is the founder and current President of Breast Cancer Hope, a charity dedicated to improving the quantity and quality of life of women diagnosed with breast cancer. He has been featured in Tatler magazine’s Best Doctors Guide (2006, 2007, 2013 and 2025) and The Times list of Britain’s Top Doctors (2010).
