He graduated from the Leeds University School of Medicine in 2002 and gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2011. His surgical experience includes training in Leeds, Nottingham, and Liverpool.

He has a long track record and significant expertise in day-case laparoscopic procedures, such as gallbladder surgery and hernia repair. Regarding hernia surgery, he also repairs recurrent hernias and offers both open and laparoscopic techniques. Dhanny has published extensively, having written more than 100 peer-reviewed academic papers and book chapters. He earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree for his research on liver regeneration. He is actively involved in national and international clinical studies and is regularly invited to speak at scientific conferences. Besides his ongoing research into liver and pancreas cancer, he is also engaged in surgical innovation and the development of medical devices. He has successfully obtained research funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC) and UKRI Cross Research Council.

He also has substantial experience in surgical training. In addition to training junior surgeons, he helped establish a successful HPB Fellowship programme in Nottingham, which has produced consultants working both nationally and internationally. He is involved in postgraduate education, including liver surgery masterclasses.
