About Prof Dae Kim
Professor Dae Kim, Consultant ENT and Thyroid Surgeon, is currently based in London, working within the Royal Marsden Hospital and St George's University Teaching Hospital. He has a wealth of experience in treating a wide range of ear and hearing problems, neck lumps, cancer, throat problems, hoarseness, nasal and sinus problems, thyroid cancer, and thyroid surgery. He is keenly interested in minimally-invasive robotic and endoscopic thyroid surgery. Prof Kim is 'dual-qualified' in both medicine (Edinburgh University) and dentistry (Birmingham University), he undertook his foundation training in Edinburgh and Cambridge teaching hospitals. Following this, he undertook a specialist ENT surgery program in units within the West Midlands and was awarded an Advanced Fellowship in both head and neck oncology and endocrine surgery. After this, he undertook an additional advanced thyroid and parathyroid surgery fellowship abroad at the Toronto General Hospital and the Mount Sinai Hospital (Canada and Japan, respectively). He further developed his skills in minimally-invasive 'keyhole' thyroid and parathyroid surgery while working under the pioneers of this technique; Professors David Terris (USA) and Paulo Miccoli (Italy). In addition, he completed a further 'Robotic and Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery Fellowship' in Seoul, Korea. Professor Kim aims to further develop and offer his patients the latest 'Scarless Trans-oral Thyroid Surgery'. Professor Kim is an active member of the research community, he became engaged in research after doing comprehensive research training at Harvard University and Birmingham University, which resulted in him being awarded a PhD for his work and the prestigious 'Syme Medal' by the Royal College of Surgeons. He continues to perform research into the role of immunotherapy in aggressive thyroid cancers, cDNA as a novel biomarker, qualitative research in surgical outcomes and patient experience. In addition, he supervises several MD/PhD research fellows under the research programme at the Institute of Cancer Research. Recently, he has been awarded more than £3.5 Million for his research and was recently successful in being awarded a major NIHR HTA grant for a multi-centre clinical trial in thyroid cancer. He has an impressive publication history and contributes to several international textbooks in head & neck and thyroid surgery. He is recognised as an expert in his field and is an invited faculty member in several international training courses and surgical societies. He is currently part of the Council for the Royal Society of Medicine (Laryngology & Rhinology), the National Institute of Cancer Research (Thyroid group) and advises the National Institute of Clinical Excellence.
