Having graduated in medicine at New College, Oxford University in 1996, Ms Emma de Sousa completed her surgical training in the North West, a period during which she worked with leading plastic and breast surgeons in the region. Her molecular research project was carried out between 2001 and 2003 at St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia which gained her a Doctorate of Medicine from Oxford and gave her the opportunity to present her work nationally and internationally. In 2013, she also completed a National Training Fellowship at the prestigious Nottingham Breast Institute.
Ms de Sousa is a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. She is vastly experienced in all fields of breast surgery and her expertise covers breast cancer surgery, breast reconstruction, revisional surgery, risk-reducing surgery, fat transfer, nipple surgery and cosmetic surgery for large, small, droopy and asymmetrical breasts.
Ms de Sousa is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) and is a faculty member on several of the Association of Breast Surgery (ABS) Specialist Breast Cancer Courses. She is also involved in teaching Liverpool breast specialist fellows, their junior colleagues and medical students. Ms de Sousa is a member of the ABS Aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery committee.
Outside of work, Ms de Sousa is a mother, daughter, runner and a skier and more recently has enjoyed road cycling. She loves baking cakes and drinking champagne!
