Professor Velupillai Ilankovan is a Consultant Maxillofacial, Head and Neck Surgeon. He specialises in the treatment of patients with skin cancer, head and neck cancer, and facial deformities. He completed his Dental training in Sri Lanka and completed his Medical Degree at the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff. Following this he undertook specialist training in facial plastics, head and neck reconstruction and cosmetic surgery in Wales, the West of Scotland and the North East. He also spent time training at the renowned Mayo Clinic in America, under Professor Jackson.
Professor Ilankovan set up About Face, a charity that supports people who have been diagnosed with cancer of the head and neck. He also established 3 centres for cleft lip and palate surgery in Southern India.
He is avisiting Professor of Head and Neck Cancer at the Beijing Cancer Hospital. He has published more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals and authored a number of book chapters. He is regularly asked to lecture at both national and international conferences and is an Examiner for Membership and Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons.
