About
Mr Tom Symes is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in Hip & Knee Surgery at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital.
He leads the Orthopaedic Department at the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Hull York Medical School. He is the revision Hip lead for East Yorkshire.
Mr Symes has a particular interest in day case joint replacement and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). Through the implementation of cutting-edge anaesthetic techniques, he ensures patients receive optimal pain control and can mobilise quickly and safely post-surgery. This approach results in a lower rate of post-operative issues and enables patients to be discharged home usually on the day of surgery or the day after.
He has also refined a muscle sparing hip replacement technique (SPAIRE technique) that allows patients to return to full activities after hip replacement with no restrictions.
Mr Symes completed his medical degree at the University of Leeds in 1999, followed by his specialised training in hip and knee replacement at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow, where he acquired expertise in performing navigated (computer aided) knee replacements. He became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2003 and later completed his Master’s degree in Evidence Based Orthopaedics at the University of Teesside in 2006. In 2010, he became a Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
At Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital, he provides treatments for hip and knee injuries and hip and knee arthritis. He has expertise in arthroplasty, knee arthroscopy, hip replacement, knee replacement, partial knee replacement and hip & knee injections.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Symes has published several papers and made significant contributions to two best-selling orthopaedic textbooks. He has shared his expertise at national meetings, delivering lectures on enhanced recovery and its impact on patient outcomes.
