About

Simon is a dedicated Consultant Oncoplastic & Cosmetic Breast Surgeon whose practice concentrates exclusively on the management of benign and malignant breast conditions and cosmetic breast surgery. He works as a consultant surgeon at Great Western Hospitals foundation trust in Swindon and lives near Marlborough, Wiltshire with his wife Nuala and his two sons, Harry and Jack.

He has over 20 years of experience graduating from The University of Manchester (MBChB) and went on to complete his general surgery training in the South of England gaining a deep understanding of therapeutic and reconstructive breast surgery. He was awarded an Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellowship following his completion of training.

He was one of the first surgeons in the UK to successfully complete the Master of Surgery degree (MS) in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery from the UEA with a merit classification. This award-winning degree program was developed with the ongoing support of The Royal College of Surgeons, The Association of Breast Surgery (ABS), and BAPRAS.

He has a wide range of publications, international presentations and prizes in surgery and has further interests in the training of future surgeons following his appointment as an honorary lecturer at the University of Bristol during which he obtained his MMEd (Master of Education degree) with distinction and was made a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He was awarded a fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2012 (FRCS) and is a full member of the Association of Breast Surgery(ABS).

He has extensive expertise in the combined use of general and plastic surgical techniques for the full range of benign and malignant breast conditions. These include oncoplastic breast conservation (e.g. Therapeutic Mammoplasty- using breast reduction surgery to remove breast cancers), perforator flap procedures (e.g. LICAP flaps), a full range of breast reconstruction techniques (implant and flap based breast reconstruction) and the management of breast asymmetry. In addition, he also offers Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy, Male breast surgery (gynaecomastia), Breast Reduction/Uplift surgery and Breast Enlargement (Augmentation) surgery.

Within the field of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, Mr. Hawkins has developed specific interests in extending the role of breast conservation in the management of breast cancer. This avoids the need for mastectomy in a greater proportion of patients diagnosed with breast cancer, specifically by applying the principles of breast reduction surgical techniques to remove breast cancers which may have traditionally required removal of the whole breast. Where mastectomy is needed or requested Mr. Hawkins has also developed a particular interest in the use of state-of-the-art implant-based breast reconstructive techniques. He personally led the introduction of the Acellular Dermal Matrix (Strattice/Artia/BRAXON) based reconstruction to Swindon and Wiltshire, with the aim of improving outcomes from implant-based breast reconstruction.

He also has a particular interest in the challenging field of congenital breast asymmetry correction and cosmetic breast surgery and has a wide range of techniques at his disposal to obtain the very best outcomes for his patients.
