About Mr Phillip Johnston
Mr Phillip Johnston is a Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon, appointed at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust in June 2009. Phil read Medicine at Cambridge University and graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Medical and Neurosciences in 1993. He continued his clinical training at Addenbrooke's Hospital graduating in 1995 with Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degrees. He was made a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2000 and started specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedics, completing an MD from the University of East Anglia in Dupuytren's genomics and cell behaviour in 2007 and the Royal College of Surgeons of England Senior Fellowship in Hand Surgery at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital in 2008. His clinical interests include elective and traumatic conditions in the hand, wrist and forearm and he provides a tertiary referral service for East Anglia in post-trauma reconstruction. He is a keen advocate for wide-awake hand surgery under local anaesthetic for suitable cases (WALANT technique), a technique which avoids the need for a more invasive, or risky, anaesthetic and does not use a tourniquet. Common conditions treated include Trigger finger, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren's contracture, wrist ganglion, joint pain treatment (joint injections). Phil also offers wrist fracture treatment (distal radius and scaphoid), distal radius osteotomy, scaphoid non-union surgery, wrist reconstruction for arthritis, peripheral nerve entrapment release (cubital tunnel, radial tunnel) and thumb base arthritis treatment. Diseases, Medical Tests and Treatments • Carpal tunnel syndrome surgery • Dupuytren's contracture • Ganglion removal surgery • Trigger finger release • Joint manipulation treatment • Joint pain treatment (joint injections) • Wrist fracture treatment (distal radius) • Radius and ulnar osteotomy • Scaphoid fracture treatment • Scaphoid non-union surgery • Wrist reconstruction for arthritis • Peripheral nerve entrapment release • Thumb base arthritis treatment
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
