Mr John M Geoghegan is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery. He leads a large secondary and tertiary referral practice focused on routine and complex soft tissue injuries, as well as primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty in both young and elderly patients.
Mr Geoghegan graduated from Nottingham University Medical School in 1997 and completed his orthopaedic training in Nottingham and at the Derby Royal Infirmary. He undertook a specialist upper limb fellowship at the renowned Wrightington Upper Limb Unit in 2008 and was appointed Consultant in 2009.
He has a particular clinical interest in sports-related shoulder injuries and degenerative shoulder and elbow conditions. His surgical practice includes a high volume of arthroscopic, arthroplasty, and trauma procedures, and he is frequently referred complex cases by other specialists.
Mr Geoghegan is the Clinical Lead for Elective Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Nottingham Shoulder & Elbow Unit, Nottingham City Hospital, and the Clinical Lead for Shoulder Trauma at the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre, Queen’s Medical Centre. He also chairs the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network for Shoulder & Elbow Arthroplasty.
An active contributor to clinical research and education, Mr Geoghegan is a Clinical Investigator for National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) studies and a faculty member for national and international arthroscopic and arthroplasty courses. He is a member of the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) at Loughborough University, where he runs a regular clinic assessing elite athletes. He has delivered instructional and masterclass lectures for the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS).
