About
Mr John Donohue is a consultant urological surgeon at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust as well as private practice in the area. He has a specialist interest in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. He qualified from Trinity College, Dublin and stayed in Dublin to do his basic surgical training. After this, he completed his advanced urology training in Birmingham and London, after which he spent 2 years as a fellow in New York at the world renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
In addition to core urology, his main area of interest is pelvic oncology and in particular laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, having spent 6 months in France, including the Montsouris Institute in Paris, acquiring this challenging skill; for which he is highly skilled.
Mr Donohue is an expert on the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer and recognises the importance of patients understanding their condition, creating a website to assist patients in decision making in this very complex and often confusing area. He uses the latest technology (MRI scanning and template fusion biopsy) to help with the diagnosis of prostate cancer. In contrast to the majority of cancers, there may be less urgency in deciding a treatment programme for localised prostate cancer. This allows patients time to come terms with the diagnosis and choose a treatment plan, for which he helps each patient individually come to a treatment plan agree by both parties.
He was the first surgeon in the UK to use the Argus adjustable male sling for men with incontinence following prostate surgery, making him a pioneer in his field.
