In 1992, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and undertook further training and research at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London and at renowned Medical College of Virginia and The Mayo Clinic in the USA. Mr Smellie received his Doctorate degree from the University of Cambridge after a period of research at the Royal Marsden Hospital into Cancer Radioimmunotherapy. He also received a specialist certificate in Endocrine Surgery from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of the UK.
As well as his consultancy work, he is actively involved in clinical research and has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals. He is regularly invited to speak on endocrine disease and cancer related topics.
