About Mr Ian C Mitchell
Mr Ian C Mitchell is a highly experienced Gastroenterologist. Mr Mitchell qualified with MBBS from the Royal London Hospital in 1980. He gained their FRCS (Eng) in 1986 and a MS on the possible pathogenesis of Crohn's disease (an inflammatory bowel condition) in 1992. For this work, Mr Mitchell was a Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1992. Mr Mitchell was appointed as a consultant in General and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Barnet General Hospital in 1994. Mr Mitchell subsequently developed a number of services within the trust and in particular the management of colorectal and gastric cancer, using advanced endoscopic (including stenting), open and laparoscopic techniques. Mr Mitchell has also been involved in basic and clinical research in these areas. Between 2005 and 2009 Mr Mitchell was an upper gastrointestinal surgeon to University College Hospital. Mr Mitchell has also worked closely with orthopaedic colleagues at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital for a number of years as abdominal surgeon to the specialised Sarcoma service. Mr Mitchell has also developed an interest in the management of common perianal pathologies including haemorrhoids (piles) fissure and fistula disease and undertakes a number of conservative and operative treatment modalities including Infra red coagulation, banding, stapled haemorrhoidectomy and HALO. Mr Mitchell has wide experience in the open and laparoscopic management of gallstone disease and its presentation as cholecystitis or biliary colic developing an acute service for these conditions during the course of their surgical training. In the course of their consultant career, Mr Mitchell has maintained an interest in teaching and training and held the post of Professor of Surgery in 2006 at The All Asia Institute of Medicine Science and Technology in 2006.
