About
Mr Ewan Kannegieter is the founder of Kann Foot Surgery and a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon with over 25 years’ experience in foot and ankle care. He is based at Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford in Essex, where he provides specialist assessment and surgical management for a broad range of foot and ankle conditions.
His practice includes a high volume of elective foot surgery, alongside second opinions and revision surgery where appropriate. He manages both routine and complex cases, ranging from common foot problems to deformity correction, reconstruction and diabetic limb salvage. His approach is grounded in evidence based practice, careful patient selection and shared decision making, with a strong emphasis on long term function and outcomes.
Mr Kannegieter graduated with distinction in Podiatric Medicine in 1999, having been awarded the Glasgow Caledonian University Clinical Medicine Prize. He completed postgraduate surgical training across several UK centres and was awarded Fellowship in Podiatric Surgery in 2012, followed by his Certificate of Completion of Podiatric Surgical Training in 2016.
After three years as a Specialist Registrar in Podiatric Surgery at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Mr Kannegieter relocated to Essex, where he worked for ten years at consultant grade across Braintree Community Hospital and Broomfield Hospital, alongside private practice. During this time, he developed particular expertise in elective and minimally invasive surgery, diabetic limb salvage, and the management of complex inflammatory and rheumatoid foot disease. He was a core member of the Mid Essex Diabetes Amputation Reduction Project and continues to work closely with colleagues in diabetes, vascular surgery and plastic surgery to support integrated care for complex foot and ankle conditions.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Kannegieter is actively involved in education, governance and professional leadership. He is a surgical tutor, lectures at regional and national meetings, and presents research internationally. He is a peer reviewer for both The Podiatrist and the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research, and has mentored surgical first assistants, non medical prescribers and postgraduate MSc students.
He is an affiliate lecturer on the University of Huddersfield Master in Podiatric Surgery programme and holds an appointment as Associate Professor of Medical Sciences at Quinnipiac University in the United States. He is widely published in foot and ankle surgery and maintains an active research profile with international collaborations.
Mr Kannegieter served as Dean of Podiatric Surgery at the Royal College of Podiatry from 2024 to 2026, having previously held roles as Vice Dean and Chair of the Southern Deanery. His national work focuses on training standards, clinical governance and patient safety. He also sits on the Medical Advisory Committee at Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford.
He is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and is a member of the Royal College of Podiatry and its Faculty of Podiatric Surgery, the International Association of Diabetic Foot Surgeons, the American Limb Preservation Society and the Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Society. In 2023, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
