About
Mr. Atul Varma is a highly experienced Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and the Head of Clinical Services for Ophthalmology at The MidYorkshire Teaching NHS Trust in Yorkshire. With over 30 years of experience in ophthalmology, he has been a Consultant in the UK for more than 21 years, specialising in complex cataract surgery, micro-incision cataract surgery, refractive lens surgery, medical retina, and neuro-ophthalmology.
Mr. Varma graduated with an MBBS and went on to complete his Master’s degree in Ophthalmology. He further enhanced his expertise by completing the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Ophthalmology and obtaining a Fellowship from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth.) in London. He has performed nearly 10,000 cataract surgeries and is a renowned trainer on the Microsurgical Skills Course for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Mr. Varma also co-organises the Advanced Phaco Study Day for trainees and leads the Cataract Advanced Training and Simulation course. He is a regular speaker at national and international conferences, including the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS). He has co-authored several research papers published in international journals and has contributed presentations, posters, and videos at various ophthalmology conferences.
In his private practice, Mr. Varma offers a comprehensive range of services, using the latest surgical techniques and intraocular lenses, some of which are not available on the NHS. He is also involved in charitable initiatives, having contributed his surgical skills to the Khmer Sight Foundation in Cambodia, helping provide sight-saving surgeries to underserved communities.
His areas of expertise include cataract surgery (with advanced options such as monofocal, toric, trifocal, trifocal toric, and extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses), medical retina (including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular occlusions), and neuro-ophthalmology.
