He later gained his doctorate in spinal surgery from the University of Nottingham for his work at the Sir Peter Mansfield Centre.
He went on to complete further spinal fellowships in Leeds and London and was appointed Consultant at the age of 35. Additionally, he is an Honorary Professor of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery at Bhopal University in India and Bach Mai University Hospital in Vietnam. In 2004 and 2009, Prof. Ranaganthan became the youngest recipient of the ISSLS award for best international spinal research. He has also received the Spine Society of Australia award.
