About
Mr Nargol trained at Newcastle University Medical School and completed his surgical training in the Northern Region. He also undertook a fellowship in pelvic reconstruction in Toronto, Canada. He currently serves as the Clinical Lead for Lower Limb Surgery at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trusts.
He is known for his work in selecting and using A* rated implants, based on extensive research into implant performance and patient outcomes. His research contributed to the identification of issues related to metal-on-metal hip implants and was influential in halting their widespread use. He has delivered over 60 presentations at professional meetings and has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications.
Mr Nargol has appeared on national television, including Channel 4’s Dispatches and the BBC’s The One Show and Look North, to discuss developments and concerns related to hip implant safety. He has also provided expert evidence in major trials related to hip surgery in the United States and Australia.
In his clinical practice, Mr Nargol uses the posterior approach to hip replacement, allowing patients to remain in hospital for only two days, with many walking several miles within six weeks post-surgery. He is also an early adopter of the Gender Knee, a knee replacement system designed specifically for anatomical differences between men and women.
He is a member of the British Hip Society and has contributed to the development of diagnostic tools, including a blood test for early detection of hip implant complications. Mr Nargol is committed to helping patients return to work and sport after joint replacement and supports access to high-quality treatment regardless of a patient’s age.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
— Mr Tony Nargol
