About Mr Alan Thompson
Mr Alan Thompson is a respected Consultant Urological Surgeon with a both a private and an NHS practice at The Royal Marsden. He is also Head of the Urology Unit The Royal Marsden and Kingston Hospital NHS Trust. His work centres largely in London and the southeast UK. After qualifying in medicine from St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1985, Mr Thompson gained experience in general surgery, transplantation and paediatric surgery, before training as a urological surgeon in a number of hospitals in the south of England as well as a year as a Senior Surgical Resident in Bermuda. He was awarded the gold medal in the FRCS (Urol) examinations in 1998 prior to taking up his consultant post at The Royal Marsden. The Urology Unit at The Royal Marsden is a multidisciplinary division which focuses on the management and research of patients with prostate, bladder, renal and testicular cancers. It is also a National Centre of Excellence for prostate cancer research. A Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal Society of Medicine, Mr Thompson is also a Full Member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons and a Member of the European Association of Urology. His patient focus is mainly on prostate and bladder cancer. He offers a comprehensive service, performing robotic assisted radical prostatectomy, brachytherapy. For bladder cancer he also offers radical surgery with various reconstructive options. Over the last five years, he has 27 peer reviewed publications and has written six book chapters.
