Mr Akash Patel is a Consultant Hip and Knee Specialist Surgeon in North London. He is Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon based at the Royal Free Hospital, London. He undertakes further private work at Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, Kings Oak Cavell hospitals and Wellington hospital. He is double-fellowship trained, an Associate Professor at University College London, and has more than 20 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of hip pain, knee pain, arthritis, sports injuries, meniscal tears, ACL injuries, ligament injuries, cartilage damage, hip impingement, hip and groin pain, and joint degeneration. He specialises in helping patients with both routine and complex hip and knee problems, combining evidence-based treatment, modern surgical techniques and enhanced recovery with a highly personalised approach to care.
Mr Patel graduated from University College London in 2005 and completed higher specialist training in trauma and orthopaedics on the Imperial North West London rotation. He then undertook advanced specialist fellowships in hip and knee surgery at the Royal Berkshire and Royal Free London Hospitals, with further international fellowship experience in Australia, Germany, France, Holland, South Africa and Switzerland. He also holds a BSc (Hons) in Neuroscience, an MSc in Evidence-Based Orthopaedics from the University of Warwick, and the FIFA Diploma in Football Medicine.
His specialist practice includes hip replacement, knee replacement, partial knee replacement, hip arthroscopy, knee arthroscopy, meniscal repair, ACL reconstruction, knee ligament surgery and trauma surgery. He also offers non-surgical treatment where appropriate, including PRP, joint injections, bracing and rehabilitation-led care. He regularly treats patients with osteoarthritis, sports knee injuries, meniscus injuries, femoroacetabular impingement, hip and groin pain, and persistent hip or knee pain.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Patel is actively involved in research, education and surgical training. He has published extensively in orthopaedic and surgical journals, received multiple prizes for his research, and presented nationally and internationally. He is an accredited Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor, Director of nationally recognised Orthopaedic Masterclass surgical courses, and has been awarded an Honorary Senior Lectureship at Imperial College London.
Mr Patel is known for a clear, thoughtful and reassuring approach. He believes patients benefit from expert assessment, straightforward explanations and a tailored treatment plan that supports a confident return to daily life, work, exercise and sport. Born in North London, he has longstanding ties to the community he serves. Outside medicine, he is a second-degree black belt in taekwondo and has run the London Marathon for charity.
