About

Dr Mahmoud Barakat is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with experience working across NHS and independent sector services. He specialises in the assessment and management of neurodevelopmental conditions in children and young people, particularly ADHD and autism, as well as associated emotional, behavioural and sleep-related difficulties. He has a particular clinical and academic interest in the interaction between neurodevelopmental disorders, mental health and sleep, and holds European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) Somnologist certification.
He has previously worked as a Consultant within NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, and completed his Higher Specialty Training across Manchester Foundation Trust and East Lancashire CAMHS. His training included posts at the Winnicott Centre and the Galaxy House adolescent inpatient unit, alongside community CAMHS experience, providing exposure to both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care for young people. Prior to higher training, he completed Core Psychiatry training across multiple NHS trusts.
His clinical work centres on comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessment and management, with a focus on ADHD and autism and their associated difficulties, including emotional regulation problems, behavioural challenges and sleep disturbance. He has a particular interest in paediatric sleep disorders, especially where these are linked with neurodevelopmental or psychiatric presentations, and applies evidence-based sleep medicine approaches within a broader biopsychosocial formulation.
Dr Barakat adopts a collaborative approach to care, integrating developmental history, family context, school or educational input and clinical assessment to develop structured and practical management plans. Alongside his clinical practice, he is involved in teaching, training and service development within child and adolescent mental health services.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
