Dr. Rao went on to qualify for the Diplomate in National Board Examination (DNB, Ophthalmology) in 2001 and became a Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow, UK) in 2002. He also completed a two-year fellowship in medical and surgical diseases of the vitreous and retina at the prestigious Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India. In 2003, he became a Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (MNAMS), India, and was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2021.
Dr. Rao's extensive clinical experience includes working as an Associate Consultant in Vitreous and Retina at Sankara Nethralaya, India, and as a Consultant at Dhahran Eye Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia, the only tertiary referral eye hospital in the Eastern Province of KSA.
In 2007, Dr. Rao moved to the UAE, where he continued his practice as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon. He spearheaded the establishment of a complete Vitreo-Retinal department, creating a Center of Excellence in Ophthalmology at two leading multi-specialty private hospitals in Abu Dhabi, a role he held until 2024. Throughout his career, Dr. Rao has performed thousands of complex retinal surgeries and cataract surgeries, achieving exceptional outcomes for his patients.
