About Dr Louise O'Dowd

Professional career Dr Louise O’Dowd is a GDC-registered Specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Periodontics (gum health), and Prosthodontics (restoration and replacement of teeth and oral tissues). She is based at Vermilion’s primary clinic in Corstorphine, Edinburgh, where her clinical focus is the provision of comprehensive periodontal treatment as part of multidisciplinary care. This includes both non-surgical and surgical management of periodontal and peri-implant disease, as well as treatment of mucogingival deformities such as dental recession. Outside her work at Vermilion, Dr O’Dowd is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute. She is actively engaged with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), serving as an Examiner for the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) and the Membership in Restorative Dentistry (MRD) examination in Periodontics. In addition, she contributes to the education of postgraduate trainees in Prosthodontics and Endodontics at the University of Edinburgh (UoE), undergraduate Dental Therapy students and NHS specialty registrars in Restorative Dentistry. Academic career Dr O’Dowd earned her dental degree from the University of Dundee Dental School in 2002. She then moved to Edinburgh to complete her Vocational Training, during which she achieved Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) from RCSEd. In 2008, she completed a Master’s degree in Restorative Dentistry (with distinction) at the University of Newcastle before undertaking specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle Dental Hospital, which she completed in 2011. Dr O’Dowd returned to Edinburgh in 2011 and was appointed Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Edinburgh, with clinical leadership responsibilities for the School of Dental Therapy. During this time, she also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PgCAP) at the University of Edinburgh.
