Professor Gianluca Rompianesi is an internationally trained consultant surgeon specialising in hepatobiliary, pancreatic, transplant, and robotic surgery. With more than 15 years of clinical and academic experience across leading centres in Europe and the UK, he offers expert care for complex conditions of the liver, pancreas, and biliary system, including cancer surgery, abdominal organ transplantation, and advanced minimally invasive procedures.
Professor Rompianesi completed his General Surgery specialty training at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, graduating with honours in 2016. He went on to obtain a PhD cum laude in liver transplantation from the same university in 2018. His extensive international training includes prestigious fellowships at the Royal Free Hospital (London), Oxford University Hospitals, the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital (London).
He holds dual fellowships from the European Board of Surgery in both Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery and Transplantation, and is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His specialist expertise includes robotic HPB surgery and living donor kidney transplantation. He currently serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Federico II University Hospital in Naples, where he leads the Living Donor Kidney Transplantation Programme.
Professor Rompianesi previously worked as a Senior Clinical Fellow in HPB and abdominal organ transplant surgery at Oxford University Hospitals and served as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford. Highly committed to medical education, he continues to teach medical students, junior doctors, and surgical trainees both nationally and internationally.
