About Dr Elspeth Hutton
Dr Elspeth Hutton is a highly qualified neurology specialist with a particular interest in neuropathic pain conditions, headaches, and peripheral nerve disease. She consults with Neurology Network Melbourne and also leads the headache and neuromuscular service at Alfred Health, where she established the clinical service for neuropathy, neuropathic pain, and headache. Dr Hutton is internationally recognised for her research into pain and has been awarded a number of prizes and fellowships for her work. Her current research is being carried out at Monash University and focuses on the role of immune modification in chronic pain and the use of neurophysiological measures to assess small fibre function in order to guide neuropathic pain therapy. Dr Hutton qualified in medicine in 2000 and went on to complete her specialist training at the Alfred Hospital and Monash Medical Centre. She then undertook a PhD in Neuroscience and was later awarded the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists fellowship at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). Following this, she spent four years researching neuropathy at the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases at the University College London. She continues to be actively involved in research and is currently conducting several clinical trials to determine further therapeutic treatments for patients with neuromuscular diseases and pain conditions. Dr Hutton is well respected in the field and has been invited to speak at various conferences such as the Australian Association of Neurologists ASM, the British Neuropathological Society, and the AIM Pain Symposium. She also holds memberships for a number of societies including the American Association of Neurologists (AAN), the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), and the IASP Neuropathic Pain Special Interest Group.
