Professor Wael Awad is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Barts Health NHS Trust where he was appointed in 2003.  He is Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and Visiting Professor at the University of South Wales.



He graduated in Medicine from Imperial College, London in 1988. He went on to train in Cardiothoracic Surgery at a number of prestigious teaching hospitals in London, including the Royal Brompton, The London Chest, Guy's, St Bartholomew's and St Thomas" Hospitals. He trained with some of the leading and pioneering surgeons, including Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, Professor Peter Goldstraw and Mr John Wright.

Following this, he undertook research on ischaemic preconditioning in the immature myocardium, at the Rayne Institute, St Thpmas' Hospital and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of London in 1999.

Professor Awad is Lead Surgeon for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) for Heart Failure,  His other specialist interests include total arterial revascularisation in coronary artery bypass surgery, surgery for aortic aneurysm, aortic valve repair/replacement (minimally-invasoive), redo cardiac surgery, mitral valve repair, surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation and mechanical circulatory support.  



Professor Awad has outstanding clinical results, as confirmed by the UK Healthcare Commission. Consequently, he receives many International referrals and also travels nationally and overseas to train local surgeons.

He regularly presents at both national and international conferences and has been published extensively in in Circulation, JAMA, The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

He has also been recognized by the ‘Marquis Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare' for his contributions towards Cardiothoracic Surgery.
