About
Professor Susana Banerjee is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Research Lead for the Gynaecology Unit at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, and Professor in Women’s Cancers at The Institute of Cancer Research. She is also the current President of the Royal Society of Medicine Oncology Section. Internationally recognised for her leadership in gynaecological oncology, she specialises in ovarian cancer and the systemic treatment of endometrial and cervical cancers.
Professor Banerjee graduated with First Class Honours in Physiology from St John’s College, University of Cambridge, where she also served as President of the Cambridge Medical Society. She completed her medical degree at The Royal Free and University College London Medical School, finishing as a University of London Gold Medal finalist. She went on to earn a PhD from The Institute of Cancer Research in 2009, receiving the prestigious San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium Novartis Oncology Basic Science Award for her research. Her achievements have been recognised with multiple awards, including the Association of Cancer Physicians McElwain Prize, the Sir Antony Driver Prize, the Pfizer BOA Young Investigator Award (highly commended), and the Fellow of ESMO (FESMO) Award in 2023.
Throughout her career, Professor Banerjee has played major roles in international oncology leadership. She has served on specialist committees for the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology, and the International Gynecologic Cancer Society. She was elected to the Executive Board of the European Society for Medical Oncology as Director of Membership from 2020 to 2022, and has held key scientific leadership positions at major global conferences, including ESMO Congress, ESMO Asia, and the ESMO Gynaecological Cancers Congress. She currently co-chairs the GCIG Rare Cancers Committee and serves as Theme Lead for Cancer Treatment Effects at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at The Royal Marsden and The Institute of Cancer Research.
A highly respected clinical scientist, Professor Banerjee has authored more than 185 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology and Annals of Oncology. Her research focuses on personalised cancer treatment, targeted therapies including PARP inhibitors, and rare gynaecological cancers. She has served as Global or UK Chief Investigator for over 30 national and international clinical trials.
