Biography
Dr Shelley Rahman Haley is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, where she treats private and NHS patients.
She studied at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, qualifying with honours in 1995. She trained in cardiology with a subspecialty interest in non-interventional cardiology, echocardiography and cardiac imaging at Papworth, Royal Brompton and St Thomas' hospitals.
Dr Shelley Rahman Haley's doctoral thesis focused on cardiac imaging techniques in women. She completed this at Royal Brompton Hospital in the nuclear cardiology and cardiovascular magnetic resonance departments in 2001.
In 2007, she was appointed as the first clinical lead for echocardiography at Harefield Hospital.
Since then, the department of echocardiography has double in size and productivity under her guidance. They provide the very latest in imaging techniques, including:
real-time 3D transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography
strain imaging
all types of stress echocardiography.
Clinical expertise
Dr Shelley Rahman Haley has an interest in adult heart valve disease, particularly complex mitral and aortic valve disease, and transoesophageal echocardiography. She works closely with the surgical teams at Harefield Hospital to assess patients who may require surgery and monitor their progress afterwards.
She also has an interest in cardio-oncology (heart problems in cancer patients), such as those who are undergoing chemotherapy or other treatment that may affect the heart.
Dr Rahman Haley prides herself on offering a service that is tailored to her patients' needs, such as performing scans herself as part of the clinical consultation. She also understands the impact of health issues on family life, particularly for women:
"The key to understanding a patient's condition and making the right recommendations for treatment is usually found by listening carefully to what the patient has to say and really understanding the issues in his or her life at that particular time."
