He graduated with an MBChB from the University of Birmingham in 1996, earning a distinction in Anatomy and honors in Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Social Medicine, Public Health, and Pharmacology, before completing his medical training at Birmingham City Hospital. In addition, he holds an honors degree in Pharmacology (BSc) and an MD from the University of Liverpool, where he researched the pathogenesis of meningococcal disease.
Furthering his academic achievements, Dr Makwana earned a PCME from the University of Wolverhampton in 2004 and qualified as an Accredited European Paediatric Allergist through the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2016. In addition to his clinical work, he has made significant contributions to research and education. He has served as the Group Director for Women and Child Health at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals and is currently the Deputy Cheif Medical Officer for the hospital. He has served as the chair of the Paediatric Committee of BSACI, and has been the Paediatric MBChB Curriculum Lead at the University of Birmingham since 2017. Dr Makwana has co-authored national guidance on milk allergy and peanut immunotherapy, and his efforts have been recognised with awards including Fundraiser of the Year and commendations for Excellence in Customer Care.
Currently, Dr Makwana practices at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals, where he has been instrumental in developing the Regional Paediatric Allergy Service and a dedicated Paediatric Infectious Disease clinic for children with unusual infections or susceptibility to infections. He also consults at Edgbaston Private Medical Practice and The Consulting Rooms Birmingham.
