About
Dr Michael Stewart is a Consultant Cardiologist and General Physician with extensive experience in both NHS and Royal Navy medical practice. He graduated from the University of Manchester in 1987 and has worked in medicine for nearly four decades.
He completed specialist cardiology training at the Wessex Cardiothoracic Centre in Southampton and at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He was appointed as a consultant cardiologist and general physician in 2003 and later became an NHS consultant in Portsmouth in 2005. Prior to his consultant career, he served for 21 years in the Royal Navy, where he gained broad experience in aviation medicine, diving medicine, search and rescue operations, and deployed medical care in both maritime and conflict settings.
His clinical practice covers all aspects of general cardiology, including the investigation and management of arrhythmias, palpitations, syncope, chest pain, hypertension, and heart failure. He has particular expertise in cardiac rhythm disorders, including atrial fibrillation and conditions requiring pacemaker implantation. He is also highly experienced in transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography for the assessment of valvular and structural heart disease.
In addition to cardiology, he continues to work as a general physician, regularly undertaking acute medical duties in emergency and medical assessment units. This ongoing work supports his expertise in managing acute medical and cardiac emergencies.
He also has specialist interests in autonomic and functional cardiovascular disorders, including POTS and vasovagal syncope, and provides assessment for aviation, diving, occupational, and sports cardiology. He contributes to research on pulmonary embolism and cardiovascular conditions and has published in this field.
Dr Stewart holds several leadership and advisory roles, including serving on medical advisory committees and contributing to national pharmacology guidance. He is also actively involved in postgraduate medical education as a Royal College of Physicians tutor in Portsmouth.
